Basic.fm call for work

Deadline: 11th June 2012

Basic.fm is an online radio station that forms part of Pixel Palace, an exciting programme of digital arts and new media at Tyneside Cinema. Basic.fm (Broadcast Art, Sound & Independent Culture) is an online space that can be inhabited by artists, curators, thinkers and interesting people with something to share.

Since launching in November 2011, basic.fm has commissioned an exciting number of leading artists, including Mark Vernon, The Noize Choir, Ed Carter, Sarah Boothroyd and Vicki Bennett (People Like Us).

In August, Pixel Palace is exhibiting a new commission, Mariner 9 by Kelly Richardson – an epic video art installation at Whitley Bay's historic Spanish City Dome this August. This exhibition will coincide with the landing of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory aka "Curiosity", on the planet Mars.

In a 12 metre-long panoramic installation, the work is a human-scale version of Mars a century or two from now, and a battlefield of real and imagined spacecraft in the centre of a dust storm. Taking NASA's own imagery and technical data of the Martian landscape, Kelly has created an uber-realistic red planet, minutely replicating its distinctive geology, weather patterns and soundscape.
For more on Mariner 9 visit: http://www.thepixelpalace.org/events/mariner9
What we are looking for

We are seeking participation from artists, curators, collectors and archivists on the themes surrounding Mariner 9 e.g. space, mars, the environment and sci-fi. Contributions will be scheduled to play on basic.fm from 1st August 2012. Submissions can include new or existing work, collections, archival material, sound art, spoken word, curated programmes and interviews.

The deadline for submissions is Monday 11th June 2012 at 5pm (GMT)

Artists will be notified via email regarding the outcome of their submitted or proposed work(s).

This is an unpaid opportunity but all selected contributions will be fully credited and linked appropriately to relevant websites and/or sources. This call is open to all, regardless of nationality, age, or career stage.

SIGGRAPH Asia 2012 - Call for artists

Deadline: 5th of June

The duality of real and virtual existence, seemingly, leans to its virtual side exponentially in this media era. Can an absence from the physical world resonate with the virtual presence, or vice-versa? Through an interdisciplinary perspective, SIGGRAPH Asia 2012 Art Gallery: Echo is seeking evidence of digital activities in the physical world and the impact of natural phenomena in cyberspace. Artistic and scientific explorations will "echo" between digital and analog spaces and fabricate a hybrid model, in which, the duality merges into a uniformed and ubiquitous state. What are our perceptions and expressions of time and space in this model, then?

Explorations may include functional, structural, cultural, emotional, experiential or metaphorical approaches. All forms of digitally-mediated art works, especially kinetic and interactive ones, are highly encouraged. The gallery mainly considers, but is not limited to, the following topics:
• 2D and 3D artworks, such as digital prints paintings, and sculptures
• Interactive, electronically-mediated, mixed media performances
• Interactive installations, landscapes, art environments
• Web-based art, responsive media
• Time-based art work
• Artworks using digital communities, robotics, touch-screens, wearable art
• Artworks using digital audio

Submitted works will be reviewed by a jury, and selected works will be exhibited in a gallery space at SIGGRAPH Asia 2012 in Singapore.

ART MOVES 2012 - BILLBOARD ART COMPETITION

Art Moves 2012 - Festiwal Sztuki na Bilbordach 2012 - COMPETITION

Check up for this year's topic! "Where is the meaning? At the top or at the bottom?"

There is no entry fee. The Competition is open and all artists interested in billboard art are invited to take part. The works should be submitted by the 20th July, 2012 via electronic mail to the address: artmoves@tlen.pl
10 most interesting works will be displayed on billboards in the city space during the Art Moves Festival in September /October 2012 in Torun, Poland. The author of the most interesting work will receive the Main Award in the amount of PLN 12.000 (about EUR 2.850, USD 3.700).
Artists are invited to prepare an artwork in response to this year's competition theme "Where is the meaning? At the top or at the bottom?"
The competition slogan can be treated as a metaphor of all the processes taking place in the world at the moment. We live in the time of crisis and we perceive it as a disease of sorts – a disease, we would like to treat as quickly as we can. On the other hand this "disease" can be the only chance for us to slow down a bit in our fast-paced world and think again about where we are heading and why we chose this particular direction. Are we happy with the way the reality we created works? Are we reaching for the top or for the bottom? Are we happy with the goals we are setting for ourselves? Are these goals ours or are they imposed on us? Where is the meaning? Can it be placed on a map? Has it evaporated? Does the meaning of our existence lie in the constant maximization of profit, accumulation of goods, consumption, wealth, being on top? Or can it be found in escaping, isolating oneself, denying reality, hiding and living in the middle of nowhere? Or maybe, it is better to find new solutions that would allow us to make a better use of the goods created and developed by humanity and use them so that they help us be happier, have better relationships with people, take care of ourselves, our loved ones and reality? How can we find a satisfactory solution? Where can we find the meaning? For more information see the Competition Rules.

Every year, exceptionally qualified and gifted artists, primarily of the younger generation, working in the disciplines of painting, sculpture and photography can apply for participation in the Lepsien Art Foundation’s international grant programme.

ALTO FEST 2012 + 2013 residency award call

Deadline for application: 31 May.

We make space for culture. We make space for theatre. For the awakening of urban space to artistic and social initiative. For this space to become the stage for culture, action, passion and reflection.
ALTO FEST brings active culture into private venues that were generously donated to the festival by citizens of the city of Naples. These venues are ready to welcome and accommodate fresh thoughts and growing awareness, with the intention of bringing together artists and audience to invigorate daily life and to make space for change. We aim to encourage individual initiative, to get people involved and to initiate human and urban retraining through the interaction of artists, citizens and the audience.
Following on from the past edition, at the end of each day the artists, audience, press and venue donors will meet at AFTERFEST, for an opportunity to discuss performances, share thoughts and exchange experiences, making ALTO FEST an important occasion for cultural engagement, which positively allows artists and audience to build networks, reducing time and distances.
The festival is an opportunity for all the artists involved to meet, discuss and confront each other about the meaning, direction, and political and poetic needs of each artistic expression within the historical context of our time, especially at a time when the word “crisis” has become so relevant and prevalent on a global scale.
ALTO FEST is launching an international call for its site-specific performing art festival, targeting art and thought researchers and practitioners, for the following sections: BODY, VOICE, SOUND, ELEMENTS/ dance, theatre, music, visual art, installations, urban flash art, symposium.

ALPHA-VILLE FESTIVAL 2012

 Deadline: 22nd June 2012

Alpha-ville is the London International Festival of Post-digital Culture. The festival presents a unique combination of advanced music, films, design, digital and new media art exhibitions, community events, urban interventions, workshops, labs and a Symposium on Post-digital Culture.

The 4th edition will take place in London from 3-7 October 2012.

2012 THEME: 'Unfinity'

We live in a unique moment in history, between two rapidly changing worlds. One is the world of decaying political and economic structures and the other is the world of an infinite explosion in technology and information. There are conflicting mindsets in every part of our culture: the contradiction between ubiquitous virtual presence and physical presence creating an identity crisis; the non-hierarchical, organic web structure clashing with hierarchical, non-organic real-world structures; the myth of the individual as a genius vs the power of the crowd and the collaborative practice; the passive and observant attitude set against active participation and co-creation. These opposing forces are placing us in a paradoxical state that we have named Unfinity.

Unfinity is a pull between these poles, a hybrid space. It’s timeless and uncertain. We believe that to ease the state of Unfinity in a human and meaningful way it is crucial to be creative, to experiment, to challenge and take action.

Alpha-ville 2012 invites artists, designers, thinkers, digital and non-digital people to consider, participate in, create and express what will be the next steps for building an alternative future that, we hope, will belong to the people.

KEYWORDS Timeless, Hybrid, Infinity, Code, Data, Body, Physicality, Space, Clould Culture, Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality, Experimentation, Unfinished, Future of Art, New Aesthetic, Failure, Prototype, Interactivity, Democratisation, Activism, Hacktivism, Avatars, 3D Printing, Openweb, Smart Cities, Sustainability, Internet of Things, Censorship, Privacy, Identity, Grassroots, Uncertainty, Collaborative Design, DIY, Active Citizenship...

call: 1st Annual Artspace Film/Video Festival

Deadline: 4 June 2012
Crystal Palace: 1st Annual Artspace Film/Video Festival, Oct. 20
Crystal Palace is an experimental film/video festival curated by Liena Vayzman for ArtSpace’s 15th Anniversary, its crystal anniversary, that calls for crystal-themed, crystallizing, and multi-faceted video and film. Non-narrative and experimental narrative work created in any film/video/digital media format is welcome. Projection will be accepted in DVD format only. Crystals include snowflakes, diamonds, ice crystals, gems like amethyst, and salt, and we call for work that explores these references in abstract or narrative form, or takes as a starting point the scientific, chemical, cultural, or mathematical aspects of crystals.

Additionally, submissions are encouraged that interpret the theme structurally by applying the metaphor of a crystal as a geometrical shape of flat surfaces with specific, characteristic orientations to the structure of the film/video project. Cultural investigations might included crystals as luxury and kitsch (Swarowski crystal swans, chandeliers); serious or tongue-in-cheek healing artifacts (healing crystals, crystals as magical objects, x-rays of crystals and their photographic/filmic permutations).
Like the Crystal Palace plate-glass building, a marvel of engineering constructed by Joseph Paxton for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, ArtSpace’s Crystal Palace aims to illuminate and amaze. Broad interpretation is welcome – send us your crystalline creations and multi-faceted video gems! The film/video festival will take place over two days, Oct. 20-21, 2012, in conjunction with ArtSpace’s City-Wide Open Studios festival, which is a convening of visual artists from across Connecticut in temporary studios and spaces throughout New Haven; the film/video festival is open to all artists, national and international. We welcome non-narrative or experimental narrative work playing on the theme of transparency, multiple facets, and processes of crystallization, or anything related to crystals or the Crystal Palace theme.
Technical details: Single channel, two-channel, or three-channel/installation work is possible. Silent or sound work welcome; any length is welcome. Sculptural and non-DVD projector projections are possible, but artist must be provide all equipment and be present to install and screen during their projection on Sat Oct. 20- Sun. Oct. 21, 12-5pm.
To submit: send (1) DVD or online link of entire film/video; (3) title, length, and date of work, (3) name, email, website, contact info, phone number; (4) Artist or Project Statement (100 words), and (5) submission fee of $10 by check made out to ArtSpace. Send to Artspace c/o Crystal Palace Film/Video, 50 Orange Street, New Haven, CT 06511. Materials other than the check may be sent via online to Liena@artspacenh.org.
Small honoraria may be available to cover artist’s local travel. For more information about ArtSpace exhibitions, programs, and the annual Open Studios festival, please see http://artspacenh.org/

2012 Award Theme
The contemporary media milieu would suggest an evolving devolution of the traditional notion of the “society of control”. The boundaries of enclosures and spaces are no longer the rigid and defined perimeters they once were. The browser, the mobile camera/screen are new enabling simulations the user canexploit to navigate alternative pathways, to experience new modes of expression and to participate in global cultural exchange.
This is reflected online and on the street. In our political discourse and our social interactions. And it is most visible when repatriated via the mainstream media and traditional news editorials coupled with wild proclamations of “new freedoms” accompanied by “real change”.
Yet what has reallychanged? What do these new counter measures look like on the ground? Where do the subversions play out? What new questions are we asking of our environment and of ourselves?
In the same evolving moment new far less visible forms of control are emerging that use these very same technological platforms: surveillance networks, social media, data mining algorithms, privacy interventions, sophisticated image gathering techniques and drone technologies. These aggregators of data and network traffic are rapidly translating our private, public and social lives into valuable sets of relational data – re-writing the notion of identity, weaving new paradigms of control.

“Unfinity”

Held at the Eighth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence and
Interactive Digital Entertainment (AIIDE’12)

October 9, 2012

Deadline for Paper and Demo Submissions:
*** July 6, 2012 ***
======================
We are delighted to announce the 1st International Workshop on Musical Metacreation (MUME2012) to be held October 9, 2012, in conjunction with the Eighth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Interactive Digital Entertainment (AIIDE’12).
Thanks to continued progress in artistic and scientific research, a new possibility is emerging in our musical relationship with technology: Generative Music or Musical Metacreation, the design and use of computer music systems which are “creative on their own”. Metacreation involves using tools and techniques from artificial intelligence, artificial life, and machine learning, themselves often inspired by cognitive and life sciences. Musical Metacreation suggests exciting new opportunities to enter creative music making: discovery and exploration of novel musical styles and content, collaboration between human performers and creative software “partners”, and design of systems in gaming and entertainment that dynamically generate or modify music.
The workshop will bring together artists, practitioners and researchers interested in developing software and systems that autonomously (or interactively) recognize, learn, represent, complete, accompany, compose or interpret music. In particular, emphasis will be put on systems with real-time aspects, since these are relevant to both art and entertainment communities.
Topics
======
We encourage paper and demo submissions on topics including the following:
* Novel representations of musical information
* Systems for autonomous or interactive music composition
* Systems for automatic generation of expressive musical interpretation
* Systems for learning or modelling music style and structure
* Systems for intelligently remixing or recombining musical material
* Advances or applications of AI, machine learning, and statistical techniques for musical purposes
* Advances or applications of evolutionary computing or agent and multiagent-based systems for musical purposes
* Computational models of human musical creativity
* Techniques and systems for supporting human musical creativity
* Online musical systems (i.e. systems with a real-time element)
* Adaptive music in video games
* Methodologies for, and studies reporting on, evaluation of musical metacreations
* Emerging musical styles and approaches to music production and performance involving the use of AI systems
Format and Submissions
======================
The workshop will be a one day event including:
* Presentations of TECHNICAL PAPERS
* Presentations of POSITION PAPERS relevant to Musical Metacreation and its future
* Presentations of DEMONSTRATIONS
* One or more PANEL SESSIONS (potential topics include international collaborations, evaluation methodologies, industry engagement, generative music in art vs. games)

Call: Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival

DEADLINE: 1 June 2011

The LUFF is dedicated to show and promote innovative films and music that have not access to a wide distribution. It is the only cultural event of its kind in Switzerland. The film selection includes the following sections:
  • short narrative films (international competition)
  • short experimental films (international competition)
  • animated short films (international competition)
  • feature films (international competition)
  • documentaries

What is “underground” ?

It is always easier for the filmmakers to decide if their film is underground or not. But to give an idea of what we are looking for, we think that underground films do not make any compromise to be made or to be seen. Underground films accept no limits, no censorships and always present an innovative point of view. The LUFF has been created after the New York Underground Film Festival, then its purpose remains the same: to support and promote films that push boundaries and break new ground — that challenge, entertain and provoke.

How to Enter

Send a preview copy of your film to the selection committee. Accepted format are:
  • VHS (PAL, SECAM or NTSC)
  • DVD (PAL or NTSC, any Region coding will be accepted)
  • DVD-R/DVD+R (PAL or NTSC)
Note: DVD-R/DVD+R have to be burnt correctly so that they can be read on most of the DVD players. In order to do so, please burn your DVD at the lowest speed you can (1X 1’385Ko/s). Every film that has been badly burnt – which means that the DVD is unreadable or the picture quality is bad (pixels, image drops,…) will not be considered for the selection. Also, try to use good quality DVD.
Every other preview formats will be refused.
Each entry must be accompanied by
  • a completed entry form (photocopies are acceptable) per film
  • a press kit if available (the absence of press kit has no influence on the selection)
Accepted screening formats:
  • 35mm
  • 16mm
  • Beta SP PAL (no NTSC)
  • DVCam PAL, NTSC
  • Mini DV PAL, NTSC
  • DVD (PAL or NTSC, any region)
  • Digital file

A Note on “Category”

Many works entered into the Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival defy easy classification, but it’s important for us that you check only one category for your entry. So please follow these guidelines:
  • If it is a documentary or animation, check one of those categories. If it’s not a documentary, and not animation, and it has a story, check narrative feature (for works 60 minutes and over) or narrative short (for works under 60 minutes).
  • For the purposes of our event, “experimental” is used exclusively for non-narrative, nondocumentary works? If it’s not a documentary, and does not have a story, then check experimental.
  • If you feel that your film fits experimental and animation equally, we recommend that you choose animation.
  • If you don’t follow the above guidelines, we will re-classify your entry appropriately!

Shipping the preview tapes or DVD

Cost of shipping to the festival is covered by the entrant. Shipping must be prepaid. Collect or COD shipments cannot be accepted. Each tape must be marked with the title of the entry. Entrant´s identification must be on the case and the tape. Please use only plastic or bubble-pack cases when shipping entries – no fiber cases please! Do not forget to specify on your package the following mention: For cultural purposes only – no commercial value.
No preview tape or DVD will be sent back to the original sender, whether or not the film has be selected or not.

Shipping the exhibition prints

The go and return transport of selected feature film prints would be at our charge.
The go transport of selected short film prints would be at your charge.
The return transport of selected short films print would be at our charge.
Entry does not guarantee placement in the program. However, each submission will be carefully considered. Festival organizers will pre-select entries that will enter the competition. If your film is chosen, you will be notified current of September 2012. The exhibition print has to be in our hand on October 8 2012.
The LUFF is not responsible for lost, stolen or missing entries. We would like to remind you to send a COPY of your original work. Due to the high number of submissions, the preview tapes or any supporting material will be kept in the festival’s archives and will not be sent back. Please not send SASEs for the return of your tape, because we will simply ignore them and use the stamps. Do not send money either.

Web Biennial 2012, Wb12: Open Call
OCCUPY CONTENT: Have we reached the end of the Internet as we knew it?
The last few years threats over the openness and the democracy of the medium have significantly augmented. With the introduction of the new Internet censorship laws on the name of intellectual property, increasing government surveillance and control under the pretense of security and continuously evolving systems of data aggregation applied by companies, the Internet territory seems to be doomed to a fatal change. No matter to which extent the new agreements will pass, how different governments and countries might react, and how companies might cooperate according to their own interests, insecurity and fear cast their shade over the Internet’s freedom.

Can networks survive with the restrictions and inhibitions being imposed to them? Can they withstand data disclosure and control? While these questions remain open, the voices rising up multiply, arguing that the internet ultimately can not be regulated and controlled. As every power feeds its counterpower and every mechanism of control, its anti-mechanism, structures can be opposed and transformed by the potentiality of resistance by millions of users around the world.
Believing that collaborative creative processes can formulate new common grounds of participation, Web Biennial 12 wishes to address a call to all creative netizens, seeking for different alternatives that can be offered.
Not only web based and net based projects but ideas, statements, platforms and tools are also welcome; as well as anything that could contribute to an open platform which aims to assist in building a free network of networks beyond control…
